Autoresponders are typically a feature of email marketing software or customer service software. These services allow for the ability to send a single autoresponder email or to automate an entire series of emails.

For marketing purposes, you can set up autoresponders to follow up with leads, onboard new customers, and engage with current customers.

For customer service, autoresponders let customers know you’ve received their email and when to expect a response.

Email marketing tools like MailChimp, Constant Contact, or ConvertKit typically offer free plans for a limited number of sends. Upgraded plans are still relatively inexpensive with pricing starting around $10-$30 per month.

We use ConvertKit to send our marketing drip campaigns and set up automation sequences—most of the examples below come from this platform.

The ROI for autoresponders is inherently high. Your team isn’t manually typing each email. You don’t have to comb through a huge list of customers to select which ones to target. The software does it all for you.

The following examples dive into the human element of autoresponders, though. Only you can decide what types of autoresponders will work for your business, when to send them, and which customers should get them.

Our business (Groove) is a SaaS tech company—so these examples fall within that framework. But I’ll keep my explanations generic so you can apply these templates to any business type.

(And as a bonus, I included a specific e-commerce autoresponder at the end of the list.)

1. Autoresponder for marketing follow-ups

We set up this autoresponder for website visitors who have given us their email address. This mainly encompasses those who sign up for our email newsletter or who download templates from a blog post.

This one-time autoresponder goes out immediately after a customer enters their contact information on a specific marketing form from our website.

There are tons of different ways to capture email addresses from your website visitors. But the eventual intent of these autoresponder campaigns remains the same: You want to follow up with these people and encourage them to buy your product.

We’ve been able to identify a handful of high-risk events over the years that typically lead to churn. If we can engage with customers as soon as we notice these signs, we have a decent chance at preventing churn.

We’re not an e-commerce company, but many of our favorite customers are. Let’s look at an autoresponder example that we love from Parabo Press.

While on their website, they prompt you to enter your email address for a discount on your order.

Using email autoresponders at your business

Autoresponders promise quick results and easy set-up for any business type. But—one word of caution—don’t underestimate the human element involved.

Use these examples to determine which type of autoresponder will be the most immediately impactful to your business. Figure out the metrics you want to improve with it. Get a baseline first. Then start your trials.

“Set it and forget it” doesn’t exist in modern business. Continue to test copy. See how customers react to different types of autoresponders. Add new touch points.
